The Dynamics of Groups and Clusters of Galaxies and Links to Cosmology
نویسنده
چکیده
The links between the internal structure of galaxy groups and clusters and cosmological parameters are reviewed here. The mass density profiles of clusters, inferred from both optical analyses of the galaxy surface number density profile coupled with internal kinematics, and from weak gravitational lensing, appear cuspy with inner density profiles at least as steep as r, as is expected from high-resolution cosmological N body simulations starting with scale-free or CDM initial conditions. The high level of substructure both in the galaxy distribution and in the diffuse hot gas seen in X-rays is consistent with dynamically young clusters and a cosmological density parameter Ω0 ∼ 0.5. Despite the importance of cluster-cluster merging witnessed by these substructures, the spherical top-hat cosmology appears to give good indications of the underlying physics of clusters and groups, including a fundamental evolutionary track in a space of observational parameters for groups. Dynamical processes operating in groups and clusters are reviewed. Previrialization of groups and clusters before their full collapse is not expected on theoretical grounds, and the ensemble of positions of compact groups, relative to the fundamental track is a potentially useful constraint on previrialization.

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Brightest Cluster Galaxies
Most clusters and groups of galaxies contain a giant elliptical galaxy in their centres which far outshines and outweighs normal ellipticals. The origin of these brightest cluster galaxies is intimately related to the collapse and formation of the cluster. Using a large cosmological N-body simulation of cluster collapse, we show how hierarchical merging naturally produces a giant, central ellip...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...
متن کاملCosmology with Clusters of Galaxies
Rich clusters of galaxies, the largest virialized systems known, place some of the most powerful constraints on cosmology. I discuss below the use of clusters of galaxies in addressing two fundamental questions: What is the mass-density of the universe? and how is the mass distributed? I show that several independent methods utilizing clusters of galaxies—cluster dynamics and mass-to-light rati...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
